There were rumors and leaks from long time about the bezel less iPhone 8. It becomes the reality, however, not with iPhone 8 but with iPhone X (pronounced iPhone 10). Apple is calling it as a 10th-anniversary device thus, the name X.
The iPhone X is the company’s first smartphone to feature a full-screen display. The is company’s first attempt to give competition to likes of Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8 and other full-screen display smartphones. iPhone X has all new ‘Super Retina’ OLED display, a reinforced glass design, and support for wireless charging. Let’s look at the features, specs & other details of iPhone X below.
Design & Size
The company provided complete overhaul in the iPhone X in terms of design and build. The smartphone has rounded corners and the display follows the curves of the design. iPhone X has complete glass design on the front and back. Apple is claiming that they have used the most durable glass ever in a smartphone. The chassis of iPhone X is made of surgical‑grade stainless steel which makes it a strong device.
The size and weight of iPhone X are shown in the above image from Apple. The size of iPhone X is close to 4.7-inch iPhone 7 which makes it very easy to handle in one hand. The iPhone X is dust, splash, and water resistant up to 1 meter and 30 minutes and rated IP67. The charging and headphone on iPhone X are enabled through Apple’s own Lightning connector, as is the case with the previous generation iPhone 7. The iPhone X comes in two color options i.e. Silver and Space Grey.
Display
iPhone X brings the change in the display segment for Apple and the company used OLED panel for the first time in an iPhone. Apple calls it as Super Retina HD display. The iPhone X has 5.8-inch all-screen HDR OLED display with 2436 x 1125 pixels resolution at 458 ppi.
The display has a very high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 with the brightness of 625 cd/m2 max. Apple has added support for the ‘True Tone’ technology in iPhone X similar to that found in iPad Pro range. Displays with True Tone technology reacts to environmental lighting to ensure colors are accurate at all times. Further, True Tone technology in combination with Apple’s the existing wider (P3) color gamut support, result in professional grade display. The display also has a fingerprint-resistant Oleophobic coating on the top.
Performance
Apple introduced a new A11 Bionic chip with 64-bit architecture in iPhone X along with iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The company claims that it is the most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone. A11 Bionic is a six-core chip with four efficiency cores that are up to 70 percent faster than A10 Fusion (found in iPhone 7 and iPhone7 Plus) and two performance cores that are up to 25 percent faster than A10 Fusion. A11 Bionic manages its power intelligently by directing tasks between the performance and efficiency cores. The CPU can even harness all six cores simultaneously when you need a turbo boost.
A11 Bionic chip also includes Neural Engine, embedded M11 motion coprocessor, 3GB RAM (iPhone 8 Plus), 2GB RAM (iPhone 8). The Bionic in the chipset name refers to its integrated dual-core Neural engine which handles all the image processing required for Face ID. Face ID maps a user’s face in 3D and capable of learning changes in user’s face such as growing beard or haircut changes, changes in Spectacles, etc. Apple claims that Neural engine handles up to 600 billion operations per second and none of the information it gathers is sent to Apple.
Camera
The iPhone X comes with rear dual camera setup with 12MP wide-angle and 12 MP telephoto cameras. The wide‑angle camera has a ƒ/1.8 aperture whereas the telephoto camera has a ƒ/2.4 aperture. Both the rear cameras have optical image stabilization and fast lenses for outstanding photos and videos even in low light. The wide-angle and telephoto cameras on iPhone X enable optical zoom, as well as the digital zoom of up to 10x for photos and 6x for videos. The cameras have the six‑element lenses, Quad-LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync.
The main camera improvements in iPhone X is due to Apple’s newly designed intelligent image signal processor (ISP) and A11 Bionic. The ISP detects elements in the scene like people, motion, and lighting conditions and optimizes photos even before you take them. Apple claims that its new camera setup also facilitates Portrait Lighting (in Beta) which uses facial detection and depth maps to capture portraits with striking shadows, spotlight effects, and real-time studio lighting effects.
iPhone X camera also has very good video capture capabilities. An Apple‑designed video encoder performs real‑time image processing for optimal quality and with HEVC compression to reduce the file size. The camera can record 4K & 1080p videos up to 60 fps. Slo‑mo video support for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps. It also has optical image stabilization to reduce motion blur and handshake in low‑light videos. You can also take 8MP still photos while recording 4K video.
Front Camera with Face ID Detection
iPhone X has TrueDepth 7MP Camera on the front. The camera features include Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting (beta), Animoji, 1080p HD video recording, Retina Flash, ƒ/2.2 aperture, Auto image stabilization, body and face detection, etc. The front camera of the iPhone X enables the Face ID user authentication method, a new way to unlock the smartphone, in the iPhone.
Face ID, enabled by the TrueDepth camera, projects and analyzes more than 30,000 invisible dots to create a precise depth map of the face. The created depth map of the face is used to recognize the user instantly. Apple claims that the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone X uses machine learning to recognize changes in your appearance. Therefore, if you put on glasses, wear a hat or grow a beard, iPhone X still be able to recognize you.
Battery Life And Charging
The iPhone X has battery two hours more than iPhone 7 as claimed by Apple in the image below:
The notable features of iPhone X Plus w.r.t the battery is the support of fasting and wireless charging. Apple says you can expect a 50% charge from 30 minutes of wired fast charging. The wireless charging of iPhone X is based Qi wireless charging standard. The wireless charging does not support fast charging.
Storage
As far as the storage is concerned, iPhone X comes with 64 GB & 256 GB versions only. There is no 32 GB & 128 GB version as was the case with previous generations of the iPhones.
