After months of leaks, Apple finally launched its new range of its popular iPhones. In contrast to speculations & leaks, the expected iPhone 8 has become iPhone X and expected iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus become the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus look identical to previous generations, however, there are a lot of internal upgrades. Let’s look at the features, specs & difference between the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
Design & Size
Everyone was hoping to have the complete redesign of iPhone 8 series of smartphones, however, Apple had a different idea. The company provided complete overhaul in the iPhone X while the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are almost identical to every iPhone since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. One change that Apple made w.r.t the design is the Aluminium backs of their predecessors have been changed to glass backs. The change has made the devices bit thicker and heavier (~7% heavier than iPhone 7) but helped Apple in providing wireless charging feature in iPhone 8 & 8 Plus. The dimensions of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are as below:
iPhone 8 – 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm (5.45 x 2.65 x 0.29 in) and 148g (5.22 oz)
iPhone 8 Plus – 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm (6.28 x 3.07 x 0.32 in) and 202g (6.63 oz)

The familiar design of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus means it retains the same sizeable top and bottom bezels with a home button and Touch ID. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus also come with IP67 water and dust resistance which protects them in up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes. The chassis of iPhone 8 & 8 Plus is made of very Rigid Series 7000 Aluminium.
On the audio side, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have louder stereo speakers (~ 25%) than the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The charging and headphone connector on iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is the Lightning connector, as is the case in the previous generations. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus comes with three color options i.e. Silver, Gold and Space Grey.
Display
As far as the display is concerned, both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus comes with IPS LCD displays that we saw in the previous generation of iPhones. The display specs of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are as below:
iPhone 8Display – 4.7-inch IPS LCD, 1334 x 750 pixels (326 ppi), 65.6% screen-to-body ratio
iPhone 8 Plus Display – 5.5-inch IPS LCD, 1920 x 1080 pixels (401 ppi), 67.7% screen-to-body ratio.

The contrast ratio (1400:1) and brightness (625 cd/m2 max) remain the same, Apple has added support for the �?True Tone’ technology in iPhone 8 and 8 Plus similar to that found in iPad Pro range. Displays with True Tone technology reacts to environmental lighting to ensure colors are accurate at all times. Further, True Tone technology in combination with Apple’s the existing wider (P3) color gamut support, result in professional grade display. The display also has Dolby Vision and HDR10 for higher dynamic range while watching content on HDR-compatible services like Netflix, Amazon Video, and Apple’s own iTunes.
Performance
Apple introduced a new A11 Bionic chip with 64-bit architecture in iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The company claims that it is the most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone. A11 Bionic is a six-core chip with four efficiency cores that are up to 70 percent faster than A10 Fusion (found in iPhone 7 and iPhone7 Plus) and two performance cores that are up to 25 percent faster than A10 Fusion. A11 Bionic manages its power intelligently by directing tasks between the performance and efficiency cores. The CPU can even harness all six cores simultaneously when you need a turbo boost.

A11 Bionic chip also includes Neural Engine, embedded M11 motion coprocessor, 3GB RAM (iPhone 8 Plus), 2GB RAM (iPhone 8). The Bionic in the chipset name refers to its integrated dual-core Neural engine which handles all the image processing required for Face ID. Face ID maps a user’s face in 3D and capable of learning changes in user’s face such as growing beard or haircut changes, changes in Spectacles, etc. Apple claims that Neural engine handles up to 600 billion operations per second and none of the information it gathers is sent to Apple.
Cameras
The iPhone 8 plus comes with dual camera setup with 12MP wide-angle and 12 MP telephoto cameras. On the other hand, iPhone 8 comes with a single 12-megapixel wide-angle sensor. The wide‑angle camera on both iPhone 8 and 8 Plus has a ƒ/1.8 six‑element lens, optical image stabilization, and a larger, faster 12MP sensor (12MP sensor is improved version of the one used in iPhone 7). iPhone 8 Plus additionally has a ƒ/2.8 telephoto camera. 12MP wide-angle and 12 MP telephoto cameras together enable optical zoom and Portrait mode in iPhone 8 Plus.

On the front, both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus has the same seven-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture (without OIS) as that found in iPhone 7 & 7 Plus.
The main camera improvements in iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are due to Apple’s newly designed intelligent image signal processor (ISP) and A11 Bionic. The ISP detects elements in the scene like people, motion, and lighting conditions and optimizes photos even before you take them. Apple claims that its new camera setup also facilitates Portrait Lighting which uses facial detection and depth maps to capture portraits with striking shadows, spotlight effects, and real-time studio lighting effects.
iPhone 8 & 8 Plus also has very good video capture capabilities. An Apple‑designed video encoder performs real‑time image processing for optimal quality and with HEVC compression to reduce the file size. The camera can capture 4K video up to 60 fps
Slo-mo1080p up to 240 fps and Time-lapse video. The optical image stabilization is designed to reduce motion blur and handshake in low‑light videos.
Battery Life And Charging
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus has battery back similar to iPhone 7 and 7 Plus respectively as mentioned by Apple. The details of battery backup provided by iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are shown below:

Apple says you can expect a 50% charge from 30 minutes of wired fast charging. The wireless charging of iPhone 8 & 8 Plus is based Qi wireless charging standard. The wireless charging does not support fast charging.
Storage
As far as the storage is concerned, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus comes with 64 GB & 256 GB versions only. There is no 32 GB & 128 GB version as was the case with previous generations of the iPhones.
Pricing and Availability
The US pricing of iPhone 8 – 64 GB ($699), 256 GB ($849) and iPhone 8 Plus – 64 GB ($799), 256 GB ($949). The phones will be available from September 22 in the US market
In India, Apple iPhone 8 starts at Rs 64,000 for the 64 GB version. The 256 GB version is priced at Rs 77,000. Further, Apple iPhone 8 Plus starts at Rs 73,000 for the 64 GB version, while the 256 GB version will cost Rs 86,000. Both phones will go on sale on September 29 in the Indian market.
